Start Benefiting from The New GI Bill
The Yellow Ribbon Program
As a veteran, you have educational benefits available to you. Numerous colleges and universities are approved to accept Veterans Administrations (VA) benefits, and offer programs tailored specifically to your needs. You will find admission counselors available to assist with tuition benefits and help complete the proper paperwork.
Here are the steps to take:
1. Determine your eligibility – Contact a U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) office to see if you qualify for VA benefits, GI Bill benefits, and/or the Top-Up program. You can speak directly with an education representative using a toll free number 888-442-4551 (888.GI Bill 1).
2. Request the necessary forms – You can get the forms you need from your regional VA office, most active duty military stations, and American embassies worldwide. The main application form is the VA Application for Benefits (22-1990). Note: if you have used VA benefits at another school, you must submit a completed Request for Change in Program or Place of Training form (22-1995). You can visit their web address to either apply online or print off application forms: http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp
3. Send your completed VA application – Mail the VA forms to the appropriate central regional office. Find your nearest office at: VA Facilities in Texas. Note: discharged students must also send a copy of their DD214.
4. Complete LETU’s admissions process and let your Student Advocate know you are pursuing VA educational benefits
5. VA completes the application process – Once the VA office receives your application, the VA rep will contact the DoD to verify that you have paid into the VA program and that the VA Entitlement was awarded to you. Your student certification information will be added to their system and the application process will be complete. (This process can take up to 12 weeks.)
